User Guide - Getting Started

This page will help you set up Windows Media Encoder and start your live broadcast.

The first thing you need to do is download and install Windows Media Encoder 9 Series from here.

We should have provided you with the following information:

  • Your username
  • Your password
  • The server address
  • The publishing point name
  • The address to access your stream
(this will usually be in the format http://<servername>/<publishingpoint>)

Once you have installed the Encoder you can access it by clicking
Start->Programs->Windows Media->Wndows Media Encoder

When the program opens you should be presented with the following screen:

(Don't worry of this doesn't appear - just click the 'File' menu and choose 'New' or click the 'New Session' button on the toolbar.)

Select 'Broadcast a live event' and click OK

This will open the New Session Wizard as displayed below

Select your audio device (and video if you are broadcasting video) and click Next

Click Next again to confirm that you want to ‘Push’ to a server

You will be asked for some details of the server.

For Server Name enter the name of the server you have been given by your Account Manager.

For Publishing Point name enter the Publishing Point name given to you by your Account Manager.

You computer may pause for a moment whilst it tries to communicate with the server.

Click Next

Select you desired encoding options. Remember that the higher the quality of your stream, the more bandwidth you will consume.
Also, a high quality stream may cause problems for listeners with slow internet connections.

Click Next.

If you want to save a copy of your broadcast to your computer you may select to do so now. This will take up a fair amount of hard drive space if you are broadcasting for a long period of time..

Click Next

Fill in the Title, Author and any other information you wish to provide.

Click Next and then Finish

After a short pause you will be asked for a username and password. These should have been provided to you by your Account Manager, you may find it convenient to tick the box for the computer to remember your password for you.

From the File menu choose ‘Save’. This allows you to save your settings so that next time you start the encoder you can just open the settings without having to go through this whole process again.

You are now ready to start broadcasting!

Click the ‘Start Encoding’ Button. You may see the following message:

Click the ‘Don’t show me this again’ tick box and then click OK.

You are now broadcasting!
